Achieving Inclusivity

Let's hear from an MEP specialist trainer – Award in Education and Training Level 3

Achieving Inclusion in the classroom…

While working with NCC for the past year and a half I have come to understand the true value of achieving inclusivity in the classroom setting.

I feel that it is not until you are faced with a diverse demographic of students that you truly appreciate the positive impact creating an inclusive learning environment has on a learner’s progression.

The LV 3 Award in Education training course for NCC, is a course built with a purpose to empower others with the skills and knowledge to become industry specific trainers or instructors. The course is filled with group tasks, presentations, peer assessments and practical work. I have discovered that generating that safe space for learners to feel comfortable while participating in this interactive learning environment is essential for full learning potential to be achieved.

Top tips a trainer can do to achieve inclusivity…

-Generate a framework as a class that outlines the expectations of learners when in the classroom setting.
-Establish a zero tolerance for discrimination, racism or prejudice.
-Encourage freedom of expression.
-Discuss the support that is in place to accommodate all learning preferences/needs.
-Converse and encourage collaboration between learners in the very first stages of the course.
-Reinforce the value of patience and listening to peers at all times.
-Celebrate differences and reinforce the power sharing perspectives can have to build knowledge.

The result…

What’s extraordinary is that these differences we all notice initially and the divides they threaten to create can soon become the very thing that strengthens and empowers their learning journey. When respect for inclusion is instilled and the learners tune in to value their peers’ differences that’s when they can share their experiences, opinions, stories and truly grow as individuals but also with one another.
